BBCOR Bat Regulation - Effective Spring 2012
by posted 01/18/2012

Sudbury Babe Ruth players and their families should be aware that the regulations governing the performance standards of baseball bats have changed. Beginning January 1, 2012, MIAA rules require that all non-wood bats need to meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard. Certified bats should have a BBCOR certification mark located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color. Bats that were manufactured under the previous BESR standard will not be allowed this season.

The MIAA rules apply to all Minuteman League Baseball League players 13 years old and older.  Bats used by players in the Patriot (13 years old) division and Minuteman  (14-15 year old)  are not to exceed 34” in length, and the bat barrel may not exceed 2 5/8” in diameter.  All aluminum/alloy barrel bats and all composite handle (only) aluminum/alloy barrels are allowed.  Please note that only composite barrel bats certified and marked BBCOR .50 will be allowed.  Wood barrel bats conforming to the specifications of Official Baseball Rule 1.10 are allowed.

Players aged 14-15 in the Minuteman Division will only be allowed to use BBCOR bats with a -3 (drop 3). Players aged 13 years in the Patriot League will be allowed to use BBCOR bats that have up to a -10. (drop 10).

For details of the current MIAA bat rules, please visit the following web site http://www.massbca.com/#/2011-bat-rules/4547774802.

Guidelines for Sudbury Babe Ruth Baseball Spring Divisions
by posted 12/12/2011

SPRING 2012 BABE RUTH BASEBALL
PLEASE READ BELOW REGARDING AGE REQUIREMENTS AND SCHEDULES

To all Sudbury Babe Ruth parents:
Please refer to the guidelines below regarding age requirements and schedules for our spring leagues.  Also please note that due to 2011 Sudbury Park & Recreation user fee increases our registration fees have increased to cover those costs.

There are always questions regarding the placement of baseball age 13 year olds.  Please use this as a guide:
  • Our Minuteman League is created for 15 and 14 year olds.  We will only place baseball age 13 year-olds in this league IF the registration numbers for this league warrant.  In this case, Eighth grade 13 year olds will have first preference.  Beyond that we will use the Patriot League tryouts to determine players suited for this level of play.
  • Players who are baseball age 12 (as of April 30, 2012) but in Seventh grade have an option to play in our Patriot League, or in Little League.  They cannot play in both.  If these players choose to play Little League they will NOT be eligible to play in our competitive summer league as a 13 year old.

PATRIOT DIVISION

Registration for Spring 2012 Patriot League for players 13 years old and 12 year old 7th graders NOT playing Little League.

The Patriot Division will play (2) Two weekday 7 inning games and one weekend practice.  All 12 and 13 year olds are strongly encouraged to play in this league.  Practice Days TBD – they are determined after teams are picked.

Tryouts for Patriot Division players will be held from 11am-12:30pm on Sunday, March 18th.  These will be for evaluation of creating equal teams.  They will also be used for potential placement in Minuteman if players are needed.

Cost for this league is $245 – before February 20th.  A late fee of $25 will be added as of February 20th and increased to $75 from March 1st - March 5th (last day of registration).

MINUTEMAN DIVISION

Registration for Spring 2012 Minuteman League for players 14-15 years old as of April 30, 2012.   It may also include baseball age 13 year olds based on registration numbers for this league and potential need to add players.

The Sudbury Babe Ruth board has made a decision to alter our policy regarding this age group in the event that they are entering Babe Ruth for their first spring season.

All eighth grade 13 year olds who opted to play Sudbury Little League in the previous year will have the option of playing in either our 13 year old Patriot League, or our 14-15 year old Minuteman League.  To assist with your decision, please consider the following information:
  • The Patriot League is comprised of 13 year old players who are entering 90 foot diamond baseball for the first time.  This league is strongly recommended as a safe and instructional introduction to big diamond baseball.
  • The Minuteman league is comprised of 14-15 year old players, all of whom have at least one year of 90 foot diamond baseball experience.
The Babe Ruth board emphasizes that the transition from the 60 foot Little League diamond to the 90 foot diamond is significant .  The board strongly recommends that any 8th grade 13 year old plays in our fall Step-up program in the autumn prior to their 13 year old spring.  All initial instructional opportunities to big diamond baseball are beneficial.

With that framework of information we are offering the players and their parents their choice of leagues for the spring.  Our goal is to provide an enjoyable and healthy baseball experience for all of our baseball players.

The Minuteman Division will play 7 inning games every Saturday and Sunday with one weekday practice.  The schedule is 14 games.  Scheduling early in the season is geared toward geographical proximity.  The league shuffles divisions every two to three weeks to create a competitive balance.  Pitching by 15 year olds is limited to ensure that accomplished 15 year olds do not dominate the league.  Tryouts for Minuteman Division players who have not already been placed on a Minuteman team will be held from 12:30pm-2pm on Sunday, March 18thPractice Days TBD – they are determined after teams are picked.

Cost for this league is $245 – A late fee of $25 will be added as of February 20th and increased to $75 from March 1st - March 5th (last day of registration).

CONTINENTAL DIVISION
Registration for Spring 2012 Continental League for players 16-18 years old.

Cost for this league is $165.  A late fee of $25 will be added as of February 20th and increased to $75 from March 1st - March 5th (last day of registration).

Please note that the creation of a team in this league will be predicated upon the ability of Sudbury Babe Ruth to field a team with the necessary roster size (at least 16 players), and the ability of the Minuteman League to provide at least four teams for this league.

The Continental Division will play 1-2 games per week.  One weekday and one weekend.  Practices will be based on field availability.  Practice Days TBD – they are determined after teams are picked.
